Active on the front lines of jazz for nearly five decades—from the 1950s through the early 2000s—American pianist Mal Waldron is well known at our shop for his stunning jazz-rock album The Call, the very first release on the Japo label. This 1973 album captures Waldron in a solo piano setting, performing on a Steinway & Sons grand piano—the legendary instrument crafted by German-born piano maker Henry Engelhard Steinway, who founded the company in New York in the 1850s and whose pianos remain cherished by players worldwide. The recordings were made in Paris in 1972. The album features Waldron’s elegant artistry in full bloom: from the 18-minute suite-like A1, to B1, steeped in Spanish modes and rhythmic sophistication. But the true highlight is B2, a breathtakingly beautiful piece dedicated to Erik Satie, one of the founding figures of modern French music and, in many ways, a precursor to ambient minimalism. A composition that gracefully bridges jazz, contemporary classical, and ambient music—a work of rare vision and depth. This is the Japanese edition, featuring an alternate cover design from the U.S. release.
