The original soundtrack album to the 1967 film Sweet Love, Bitter, with music composed by American pianist Mal Waldron, who remained active at the forefront of the jazz scene for nearly half a century, from the 1950s through the early 2000s. At our shop, Waldron is especially popular for the astonishing jazz-rock album The Call, released as the very first title on the Japo label. The lineup features Dave Burns (tp), Alfred Dreares (ds), George Coleman (as), Charles Davis (ts), George Duvivier(b), and Richard Davis (ds). From the theme reminiscent of Waldron’s classic “Left Alone” onward, the performances are perfectly attuned to the film’s narrative, inspired by the life of Charlie Parker. Throughout the album, superb playing unfolds, vividly evoking the bustle of New York as if the scenes rise before one’s eyes. A true masterpiece among masterpieces. Original U.S. pressing.
