Centered around German jazz trumpeter Manfred Schoof—who has been active in the avant-garde/free jazz scene since the 1960s and has released mature and moody works on labels like ECM and Mood Records since the 1980s—this quintet features a lineup of top-tier musicians: Michel Pilz (bass clarinet), Rainer Bruninghaus (piano, synth), Gunter Lenz (bass), and Ralf Hübner (drums). The album was released in 1980 on JAPO, a sub-label of ECM. It opens with A1, an explosive interplay that unfolds into a spiritual journey; A2 and B1 showcase Schoof’s signature floating trumpet sound that epitomizes his 1980s style; and B2 combines drive with elegance. The entire album is filled with outstanding performances. You can also hear Bruninghaus’s iconic synth pad sounds. Highly recommended.

A2: The Abstruct Face of Beauty
B1: Sunrize
B2: Old Ballad
