A 1978 album by a quartet led by German jazz trumpeter Manfred Schoof, who has recorded numerous masterpieces for ECM. Released on ECM’s subsidiary label JAPO, the album features outstanding German and Dutch musicians including Jasper Van’t Hof (p), Michel Pilz (b-cl), Günter Lenz (b), and Ralf Hübner (ds). With a sophisticated approach that brings romantic compositions together with free-form playing, the quartet presents contemporary jazz in which waves of silence and chaos continually intersect. B1 and B2 are particularly striking, enveloped in a dry, austere atmosphere reminiscent of the cover artwork, yet possessing a profound sound that seems to penetrate the innermost depths of the human spirit. B3 is another highlight, distinguished by an organic musical vision reminiscent of Don Cherry. German pressing with unlaminated cover and black labels.
B2: Weep and Cry
B3: Flowers All Over
