Released in 1975, this is the debut album by Mannheim Steamroller, the American new age group formed around Chip Davis and Jackson Berkey. The album presents easy-listening-style instrumental music that blends electronics with acoustic sounds informed by chamber music and early music, yet an organic sensibility can be felt throughout every corner of the record. Among its many fine pieces, A4 is especially notable: a sophisticated ambient track in which simple, minimal phrases on acoustic and electric piano proceed with quiet restraint.
