Released in 1979, this leader album is by American saxophonist Marion Brown, who remained active at the forefront of the music from the 1960s through 2000 and also left behind several masterpieces for early ECM. This is a Japan-produced release, produced by Yoshio Ozawa. The album is centered on a quartet with Hilton Ruiz on piano, Earl May on bass, and Warren Smith on drums and percussion, with Karl Rausch appearing on guitar on two tracks only. Taking a step away from Brown’s avant/free jazz direction, it presents beautifully scenic contemporary jazz that seems to carry forward the spirit of his 1975 masterpiece Vista. A masterpiece among masterpieces. Especially recommended are the title track A1 and B3, where Rausch’s guitar resonates beautifully within a quietly suspended atmosphere.
