Despite a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down, legendary Japanese drummer and percussionist Masahiko Togashi continued performing by developing his own unique playing technique. This masterpiece captures him together with one of Japan’s foremost jazz pianists, Masahiko Satoh, who has remained at the forefront of the scene since debuting with his 1969 leader album Palladium. The recording documents their appearance at the “Inspiration & Power 14 Free Jazz Festival 1,” held in 1973 at the Art Theatre Shinjuku Bunka. It was Togashi’s first live performance after becoming paralyzed, and throughout the album you can feel the extraordinary atmosphere—an austere tension in which the musicians place sonic fragments into the space one by one, rising and falling as if pulled by each other’s gravity. The entire performance is a stunning display of improvisation, radiating both a profound sense of liberation and an almost fearsome intensity.
