Massimo Ciolli Quartet
Cronopios
Splasc(h) Records (Italy) 1989
H 171 (LP)
sleeve : EX(SOC)
media : EX-/EX-(some slightly noises. some light click noises.)
This 1989 release is the only vinyl leader album by jazz guitarist Massimo Ciolli, who is still active today and based in Florence, Italy. A quartet recording featuring Sergio Gistri (trumpet, flugelhorn), Nicola Vernuccio (bass), and Stefano Bambini (drums), it was released on Splasc(h) Records, a high-quality label that has led the Italian contemporary jazz scene since the 1980s. A1 opens with a guitar solo that evokes the sound of a berimbau before unfolding into smoky modal jazz, while B2 is an atmospheric bossa jazz number with a mystic aura. Though rooted in modern contemporary jazz, the album evokes the deep, spiritual soundscapes reminiscent of Jan Garbarek or Enrico Rava's works on ECM. Truly cool and compelling.
A2: Ballad
B1: 22/7
