A masterful two-LP set released in 1980 by Massimo Urbani, a precocious saxophonist prodigy who led the Italian avant-jazz scene with Enrico Rava and Giorgio Gaslini as a teenager in the early 70s and died in 1993 at the age of 36. Recorded the same year at the Music Center in Bologna with a quartet featuring Luigi Bonafede (p), Furio Di Castri (b) and Paolo Pellegatti (dr). A1 is dedicated to the two great American saxophonists Albert Ayler and John Coltrane, two of Urbani's strongest influences and admirers. It's a white-hot performance that blows with all his might with the same vision as both men, who strove to reach spiritual heights through jazz. B1 is a virtuoso performance of Coltrane's historical masterpiece, blasting out the spirit of Coltrane's mentor. D1 is an emotionally rich rendition of Mal Waldron's score. Also features Urbani's original score and a Charlie Parker tune. Original Italian pressing. It includes Japanese insert by DIW, who were responsible for Japanese distribution at the time.
