A 1983 album by the Vienna Art Choir, released on the German experimental jazz label Moers Music. Under the overall direction of Swiss composer Mathias Rüegg, best known as the leader of the Vienna Art Orchestra, the project brings together a total of 12 vocal performers with Lauren Newton at the forefront. The instrumental lineup includes George Lewis, an AACM-associated trombonist who also recorded landmark works for Black Saint, along with Wolfgang Puschnig, Christian Radovan, and others. Centered around Newton’s astonishing vocal work, the album presents an exceptionally deep and experimental performance in which the human voice produces an extraordinary range of sounds, at times functioning almost like a percussion instrument. A remarkable work from start to finish. The fact that each track title gets progressively longer as the album goes on is another nice touch.
