McCoy Tyner’s first leader album for Blue Note after leaving the John Coltrane Quartet. Featuring a powerful quartet with Joe Henderson, Ron Carter, and Elvin Jones, the album carries a spiritual intensity directly connected to Coltrane’s lineage, while Tyner’s own clear sense of structure and weighty, dynamic piano touch run through the entire performance. “Passion Dance” is a breathtaking piece, where modal repetition and sharp rhythmic drive rise with overwhelming force. Henderson’s supple, shadow-toned tenor, Jones’ polyrhythmic drumming, and Carter’s deep, steady bass are tightly interwoven with Tyner’s hard-edged chord work. A masterpiece in which power, spirituality, and refined beauty come together on a remarkably high level. Japanese pressing released by Toshiba EMI in 1976. Includes insert.
