Released in 1962, this was the debut album as a leader by American pianist McCoy Tyner, who became a central member of John Coltrane’s classic quartet from 1960 onward and delivered remarkable performances on historic masterpieces including *Coltrane*, *Ballads*, *A Love Supreme*, and *Ascension*. A trio recording with Art Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums, the album centers on Tyner’s original compositions while also including standards and popular songs. The lightly grooving title track A1 and B2 are among the many superb performances that fully reveal the talent of the young Tyner. Personal recommendations include the ballad B1, with its richly lustrous and deeply absorbing piano lines, and B3, driven by an irresistibly pleasant Latin-inflected rhythm. Original US pressing with glossy orange-and-black labels bearing the “A PRODUCT OF AM-PAR RECORD CORP.” credit and VAN GELDER stamps.
