An American piano heavyweight and a core force in John Coltrane’s Classic Quartet from 1960 onward, McCoy Tyner steps out with his very first leader album, dropped in 1962. He’s flanked by Art Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums, forming a razor-tight trio. Centered around Tyner’s own original charts while also sliding in choice standards and pop tunes, this set delivers a young Tyner at full creative voltage. You get that breezy, hard-grooving lift right from the title cut on Side A and again on B2 — pure sparks. Side B opens with a deep, velvety ballad that lets you sink right into his soulful touch, and B3 brings a vibrant Latin pulse that’s simply irresistible — personal favorites. This is the original U.S. pressing, carrying the “A PRODUCT OF AM-PAR RECORD CORP” credit and the glossy orange-and-black design on the labels, and the VAN GELDER stamp in the deadwax — all the hallmarks collectors chase.
