A 1978 leader album by Austrian-born jazz trumpeter Michael Mantler, who established his career in the United States. The quintet features Larry Coryell (g), Carla Bley (p, synth, ts), Steve Swallow (b), and Tony Williams (ds). Built around Coryell’s psychedelic electric guitar, the album unfolds as a highly experimental form of jazz-rock that comes remarkably close to progressive rock, despite being performed by some of the most accomplished jazz musicians of the era. Carla Bley’s synthesizer playing in particular evokes the sound of European symphonic rock. An unusually adventurous and uncompromising recording from start to finish.
