Released in 1983, this album as a leader is by Austrian-born jazz trumpeter Michael Mantler, who established his career in the United States. Produced by his wife, pianist Carla Bley, the album features Bley on piano, Mike Stern on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, Nick Mason on drums, and the London Symphony Orchestra, with arrangements and conducting by Michael Gibbs. The album can be regarded as a continuation of the musical direction explored on Mantler’s 1978 album Movies and 1980’s More Movies. The suspenseful string orchestra, minimally repeating bass lines, and Mike Stern’s roaring electric guitar are particularly striking, creating the sensation of listening to the soundtrack of a hard-boiled crime film or suspense movie set in 1970s New York.
