Original soundtrack album for Peter Greenaway’s The Draughtsman’s Contract, with music composed by British composer Michael Nyman. Originally active as a music critic, Nyman is known for applying the concept of “minimalism” in his writing on the music of John Cage, a perspective that would have a major influence on later contemporary music. His ideas around ambience have also been cited as an inspiration by artists such as Haruomi Hosono and Yasuaki Shimizu. Produced by David Cunningham, known for his work with The Flying Lizards, the album features violin, bass guitar, baritone saxophone, double bass, saxophone, bass trombone, euphonium, and Nyman himself on harpsichord and piano. The music creates a highly distinctive atmosphere through the unstable coexistence of 17th-century Baroque elements and minimalism. A fascinating work in which the singular qualities of both Nyman and Cunningham are vividly apparent.
