Michael Pierre Vlatkovich is an American trombonist who has been active since the early seventies and has played in The Vinny Golia Large Ensemble, Oingo Boingo and Brian Setzer's groups. This his first leader album was released in 1981. The band features Michael Jacobsen (cello), Roy Poper (tp), Lou Gonzales (tp), trombone, trumpet, tuba, saxophone, strings (violin, cello) and drums. It is including a free-form improvisation, but it is not just a freaky performance. Like Art Ensembe of Chicago, there's a hint of New Orleans jazz, and even a hint of country music. I love the way he sublimates his love for old jazz into organic jazz. It approximates Don Cherry's "Actions" and "Eternal Rhythm".
