Flutist Michio Kai, who has been based in Germany since the 1970s and has been active mainly in Europe, produced this masterpiece in 1979 with five composers representing Japanese contemporary music, including Yuji Takahashi, Joji Yuasa, Katsuhiro Tsubonoh, Sessyu Kai, and Yoriaki Matsudaira. It was released on ALM Records, a label run by Kojima Recordings. In addition to the solo flute performance, this album features a duo with Yuji Takahashi on piano. All the pieces are excellent, but the duo with piano on A3 (composed by Takahashi) and B2 (composed by Tsubonoh) is outstanding. The sound quality is excellent, as you would expect from a Kojima recording, and the tension-filled flute and piano sounds floating in a sound field with moderate natural reverb will take you away. Beautiful copy has arrived.
