Released in 1979, this was the first album as a leader by American guitarist Mick Goodrick, who joined Gary Burton’s group in the mid-to-late 1960s and later became a member of Jack DeJohnette’s Special Edition during the 1980s. The quartet features an impeccable lineup of musicians closely associated with ECM: John Surman on soprano and baritone saxophones and bass clarinet, Eddie Gomez on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Highlights include B1, where Goodrick’s meltingly fluid, richly textured electric guitar and Surman’s lustrous soprano saxophone soar over an open and expansive rhythm section, and B3, whose majestic musical landscape evokes a vast open grassland. Its deeply organic character—ECM at its very best—draws the listener irresistibly into the music. A masterpiece. US pressing.
