Needless to say, this is a monumental double album released in 1974 by Miles Davis, one of the true giants of the American jazz scene and a historic masterpiece. Drawn from recordings made between 1970 and 1974—during the same period as On the Corner (1972), the groundbreaking work in which Miles, ever hungry for new music, incorporated funk inspired by Sly & The Family Stone—the album compiles excerpts from long, extended sessions. Featuring an all-star lineup from Miles’s 1970s groups, including Herbie Hancock, Mtume, David Liebman, Al Foster, Michael Henderson, Bernard Purdie, Carlos Garnett, and many others, the pieces were shaped through extensive editing, cut-and-paste techniques, and structural decisions reflecting the distinct sensibility of Miles and producer Teo Macero. Throughout the entire album, an extraordinary and smoky atmosphere pervades, and Miles’s muted trumpet—floating in deep reverberation—strikes the listener with overwhelming force. An essential record that deserves a place in every home. This is the Japanese edition released in 1981.
