Czech jazz bassist Miroslav Vitous released his first album on ECM in 1980, a quartet album featuring familiar faces such as John Surman (ss,bc), Kenny Kirkland (p) and Jon Christensen (dr). While Vitous is best known for its 1976 deep jazz funk album Magical Shepherd and its free-style work, this is ECM at its most refined and sensitive. Wood bass with its violin-like melodies, acoustic piano and saxophone with their melancholy melodies, and drums with their expressive surges and ebb and flow, this is ECM jazz at its purest and most impeccable.
