Released in 1980, this album is by Mustapha Tettey Addy, one of Ghana’s foremost drummers and percussionists. It was recorded live at the Festival des Arts Traditionnels, held in Rennes, France, in 1979. Through a series of solo performances drawing on ceremonial music, dance rhythms, and percussion techniques from across Ghana, the album features A1, based on a ritual rhythm originating in northern Ghana; A2, an interpretation of the northern Ghanaian Bambaya rhythm; and A3, performed on a pair of iron bells used by the Ga people. Raw, elemental percussion strikes and African chants surge and whirl throughout the record.
