Album released in 1964 by the New York Contemporary 5, a group led by Don Cherry, Archie Shepp and John Tchicai and featuring J.C. Moses and Don Moore, who were exploring new forms of jazz in New York in the early 1960s. Album. This was the first of a series of live recordings made at Jazzhus Montmartre, Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1963. The album begins with A1, which features oriental scale phrasing that foreshadows Don Cherry's later work, and continues with scores by Thelonious Monk and Ornette Coleman, before concluding with a groovy tune composed by Tchicai. Available together with Vol. 2.
