An album released in 1961 by Nina Simone, one of the quintessential Black American jazz singers, renowned for her ability to deliver everything from jazz standards to raw, primitive Afro-inspired songs. Produced by the great Cal Lampley, who had been active at the forefront since the early 1950s, the recording features a trio with Al Schackmen on guitar, Chris White on bass, and Bobby Hamilton on drums. Alongside the title track “Forbidden Fruit,” the album includes the jazz standard “Work Song,” “Rags and Old Iron” by the Norman Curtis and Oscar Brown Jr. duo—a piece also sung by Maki Asakawa—and “No Good Man,” among many others that would go on to be regarded as signature pieces in Nina Simone’s legacy. This edition is the 1965 reissue in mono.
