East of Isar
EGO Records (Germany) 1978
4010 (LP)
sleeve : EX+(light wear on corner.) media :
Led by German saxophonist Joe Haider, often praised as a worthy heir to John Coltrane, this superb session was released in 1978. Joining him are a first-class lineup of musicians who each recorded leader albums on Haider’s own EGO Records: Sal Nistico (tenor sax), Benny Bailey (trumpet, flugelhorn), Isla Eckinger (bass), and Billie Brooks (drums). The program features five tracks: opening with a cover of the title piece from Horace Parlan’s 1974 SteepleChase release (A1), followed by a jazz classic (A2), an original composition by Haider (A3), a Vince Benedetti piece (B1), and a Sal Nistico original (B2). Straight-ahead hard bop throughout, but performed with such conviction and vitality that it’s impossible not to be captivated.
A2: Body and Soul
A3: Blues for Trane
B2: East of Isar
