An album released in 1967 as part of the Ethnic Series by Lyrichord, a long-established label based in New York, USA. This album features field recordings of the traditional music of Orissa, a state in eastern India facing the Bay of Bengal. Orissa is known for its ancient Hindu temples and is a unique region where numerous tribal cultures coexist. This rare recording captures indigenous musical traditions distinct from the commonly imagined classical Indian music. It includes salutation songs dedicated to the Hindu deities Lakshmi and Sita by the Paraja tribe, ritual music performed by local musicians of the Khond Paraja tribe, and wedding music of the Saora tribe. A valuable work that offers a glimpse into the rich folk traditions of Orissa.
