An album by Nohso-Kai, led by Yoshitaka Aoyagi, who was active as a member of the Tokyo Cuban Boys and later became the chief priest of Nohso-Hachiman Shrine in Iizuka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Nohso-Kai is a Japanese taiko drum ensemble formed with the aim of reclaiming the spiritual and cultural identity of the Japanese people by reinterpreting Nohso-Daiko—a drumming tradition born in Aoyagi’s native Chikuho region—through a modern sensibility. This album features two powerful pieces: “Hoshino Hachiman Daiko,” a traditional drumming performance handed down since the Kamakura period at Hoshino Hachiman Shrine in Hoshinomura, Yame District, Fukuoka; and “Daitokuzan Daiko: Kaiten,” an arrangement by Aoyagi commissioned by Tokuyama City in Yamaguchi Prefecture as a requiem prayer for the young lives lost in times of national crisis. Both tracks are remarkable performances in which the wild, dynamic taiko rhythms seem to reach deep into the listener's soul. This is Japanese groove at its finest.
