Released in 1982 by the renowned French ethnomusicology label Ocora, known for its outstanding field recording catalogue. This album captures rare on-location recordings made in Sri Lanka, the island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southern coast of India. Side A documents a Shiva Linga ritual at Kelaniya Temple, a sacred pilgrimage site believed to be the last place visited by the Buddha in Sri Lanka. Side B features monks chanting protective Theravada Buddhist scriptures, recorded in a traditional temple setting. As with Ocora’s finest releases, the sound quality is exceptional — the raw resonance of ritual instruments and devotional chanting is captured with striking clarity. A truly precious document and an essential field recording. Highly recommended.
