Released in 1980, this album by Old and New Dreams features Don Cherry, Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, and Eddie Blackwell, all former members of Ornette Coleman’s groups. It contains live recordings from their performance at Theater am Kornmarkt in Bregenz, Austria, the same year. The quartet performs three Ornette Coleman compositions, along with one original piece each by Cherry, Redman, and Haden. By this period, their interpretations of Coleman’s music had reached an exceptionally high level, and the results are truly superb. Also outstanding is A2, an ethnic jazz piece composed by Cherry, filled with African and Asian melodic sensibilities. qThe vivid presence of the live recording and the free, fully matured playing of all four musicians are simply irresistible. Highly recommended.

A2: Mopti
B2: Broken Shadows
