Released on ECM in 1979 following their album for Black Saint, this record is by Old and New Dreams, the quartet of Don Cherry, Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, and Eddie Blackwell—four musicians who had pursued new forms of jazz alongside Ornette Coleman during his Los Angeles period. As with the Black Saint album, it expresses both their profound respect for Coleman and the quartet’s own musical identity at the time. Based on traditional music from Ghana, A2 is superb Afro-jazz, with Cherry and Redman playing an African-inflected melody in unison over Blackwell’s deeply rooted drum and percussion rhythms. A3, naturally composed by Cherry, is wonderful ethnic jazz distinguished by his beautifully nostalgic trumpet playing. Redman’s B2 enters an especially deep realm, fusing the spirit inherited from Ornette with traditional ethnic music. Original German pressing.
