The debut album by Olodum, released in 1987. Founded by percussionist Neguinho do Samba, Olodum is a cultural group based in the Afro-Brazilian community of Salvador, the capital of Bahia, Brazil. This is one of the definitive recordings of samba reggae, a style that fuses traditional Brazilian samba beats with the rhythms of merengue, salsa, and reggae. Throughout the album, you can feel the earthy percussion rhythms deeply connected to African roots, along with a strong musical influence from Caribbean cultures such as Cuba and Puerto Rico. Its sound also seems to have had an influence on a series of works by Carlinhos Brown, as well as Sergio Mendes’ outstanding 1992 masterpiece Brasileiro.
