This is the first album, released in 1976, by Opposite Corner, a Swedish jazz quintet consisting of Ake Johansson (piano), Gunnar Fors (trumpet), Gunnar Lindgren (tenor saxophone), Lars-Urban Helje (bass), and Mats Hellberg (drums). It was part of Caprice Records’ Jazz i Sverige series, which showcased emerging Swedish jazz musicians. The A-side features a suite arranged from Erik Satie’s Trois Gnossiennes, while B1 opens with an intro that echoes Nordic folk melodies before expanding into liberating spiritual jazz. B3 delivers cool waltz jazz, with a weighty yet nimble rhythm section and expressive tenor saxophone blows. Throughout the album, straight-ahead modal jazz rooted in the U.S. tradition is interwoven with subtle Nordic sensibilities, resulting in a spiritually rich masterpiece of Swedish jazz. Highly recommended.
