After the passing of Collin Walcott, the renowned tabla and percussion master Trilok Gurtu, known for showcasing his primal performance style in numerous ethnic jazz masterpieces, officially joined Oregon for their 1987 release. The album features highlights like A1, where Ralph Towner’s piano and synth work create an irresistibly soothing atmosphere, and A2, where Gurtu’s dry tabla and Paul McCandless’s oboe interplay beautifully. Compared to their previous works, the sound boasts an even greater transparency, complemented by Gurtu’s percussion, which adds a stronger sense of rhythm. This is a standout album that captures the new and evolved Oregon sound. Highly recommended.
