Something Else!!!!

The landmark debut album released in 1958 by American saxophonist Ornette Coleman—needless to say, the father of free jazz and a towering influence on countless musicians, including Don Cherry. Recorded in a Los Angeles studio before Coleman relocated to New York, these sessions feature a quintet of close collaborators: Don Cherry (trumpet), Walter Norris (piano), Don Payne (bass), and Billy Higgins (drums), performing entirely Coleman’s original compositions. While the structures still draw on the conventions of bop, the phrasing is strikingly free, already hinting at the elements that would later crystallize into Coleman’s fully realized free-jazz language. This is a 1975 reissue from King Records’ Contemporary Jazz 1500 Series.
