American saxophonist Ornette Coleman, known as the father of free jazz, and a significant influence on numerous musicians, including Don Cherry, released his 2nd leader album in 1959. This historic masterpiece was recorded in New York with a quartet featuring Don Cherry (cornet), Charlie Haden (bass), and Billy Higgins (drums), longtime experimental collaborators from their lesser-known days. Starting with influences from rhythm and blues, the album evolves into a unique style of free and spontaneous improvisation, showcasing Coleman's breath of fresh air that made him a darling of the era. The avant-garde nature of this work is truly remarkable, especially considering it was created in the late 1950s.
