French composer and pianist Oswald D’Andrea, who since the late 1950s had written numerous French pop songs for artists such as Georges Moustaki and Pia Colombo as well as a large number of film soundtracks, released this album in 1969 under the production of label owner Moshe Naim. Featuring Pierre Nicolas (b) and Andre Arpino (ds), it is a trio recording. As the titles Concerto and Etudes suggest, Side A consists of a six-part study, while Side B presents a six-part concerto—a rare type of piano trio work that fuses modern classical contemporary music with jazz. It is an intriguing piece in which D’Andrea’s sensibilities as a composer are strongly revealed, with an approach reminiscent of Germany’s Friedrich Gulda.
