This 1960 album by Pannalal Ghosh, a bansuri (Indian flute) player and composer from Barisal, Bangladesh, who made his mark in India, is a landmark recording. He is regarded as the first musician to introduce the bansuri, a flute capable of producing a full scale using seven finger holes. Side A features Raag “Yama”, one of the most popular ragas, typically performed in the evening or early night, utilizing all seven notes of the scale. Side B presents Raag “Shri”, another raga traditionally played at night. Both tracks are extended raga performances where Ghosh’s mysterious bansuri tones flow over the soft, distant drone of the sitar and the gentle rhythms of the tabla. A perfect album for relaxed, immersive listening. Original Indian pressing.
