Papa Wemba is a Congolese singer and songwriter who began his career in 1969 with Zaiko Langa Langa, and later led his own group, Viva La Musica. Although Wemba would gain international recognition in the wake of the world music movement, his music is not a sophisticated sound like those produced by Martin Meissonnier, the man behind Manu Dibango and King Sunny Ade. It's more primitive. The vocal/chorus work on A1 is unique, with a scale somewhat familiar to the Japanese.
