Released on ECM in 1984, this album as a leader is by Pat Metheny, unquestionably one of the world’s greatest guitarists. He is joined in a trio by Charlie Haden on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Side A presents beautifully sensitive interpretations of compositions by Horace Silver and Ornette Coleman. Side B features two Metheny originals alongside one piece co-written with Haden. As expected, Metheny’s own compositions are especially outstanding. B1 offers a quintessential Metheny sound, with the distinctive tone of his guitar synthesizer floating through a crystalline, deeply spacious sonic field. B2 is truly extraordinary. It opens as though bursting straight through to the furthest reaches of the universe before plunging into a torrent of improvisation charged with overwhelming spirituality. Metheny’s guitar and Higgins’s drums pour forth like a flood, at moments sounding almost avant-garde, yet concentrated listening reveals an exceptionally subtle and sensitive musical world beneath the intensity.
