Released in 1977 after Pat Metheny’s departure from the Gary Burton Group, this was his second album for ECM. He is joined by keyboardist Lyle Mays and drummer Dan Gottlieb, both of whom would later become members of the Pat Metheny Group, as well as the extraordinary German bassist Eberhard Weber. A truly beautiful masterpiece, featuring the soft, lustrous tones of Metheny’s fifteen-string harp guitar, Mays’s flowing piano, and Weber’s bass, which seems to send melodies sparkling into the air. The overflowing beauty of B4 shares a kindred spirituality with the music of Egberto Gismonti and could even be described as ambient jazz far ahead of its time. The album also contains clear signs of the distinctive sound that would later come into full bloom with the Pat Metheny Group. German pressing with an unlaminated sleeve.
