After moving from Havana to New York in the 1950s, Cuban conga player Carlos Valdes Galan, better known as Patato, made his mark not only in Latin music but also in the jazz world as a renowned quinto player. This 1976 album by Patato and his Latin Percussion Friend features six Latin percussionists weaving aggressive percussion ensembles rooted in Cuba’s distinctive 2-3 and 3-2 rhythms, combined with primitive vocals and choruses to stunning effect. A masterpiece of Afro-Cuban music, it also showcases Patato’s excellent acoustic guitar work.
