This is a 1974 album by Paul Bley, a renowned Canadian jazz pianist who is known for his participation in groups like the Ornette Coleman Quartet and the Jazz Composer's Orchestra, as well as for creating numerous masterpieces with his own groups. He was also a central figure in the New York Loft Jazz scene. The album features recordings from a live performance in Haarlem, Netherlands, in 1966 with a trio consisting of Mark Levinson on bass and Barry Altschul on drums. The songs performed during this concert have been part of Bley's repertoire and have been played multiple times. The A-side of the album spans 19 minutes and 55 seconds, while the B-side extends to a remarkable 24 minutes and 30 seconds, showcasing Bley's penchant for expansiveness and improvisation. Bley's piano phrasing and sense of nuance, reflecting his introspective nature, can become quite addictive once you get into it.
