Released in 1973, this duo album brings together Paul Bley, one of Canada’s leading jazz pianists, known for his work with the Ornette Coleman Quartet, the Jazz Composers Orchestra, and numerous acclaimed recordings with his own groups, and Danish jazz bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, renowned for his exceptional playing across a wide range of ensembles. Recorded in Copenhagen that same year, the album consists almost entirely of compositions by Bley, with the exception of B5, written by Annette Peacock. Highlights include the deeply atmospheric A2, where gently tremoloing electric piano intertwines with bowed double bass. Throughout the album, Bley and Pedersen unfold fluid, floating performances that seem almost to paint images in sound. A masterpiece from the early years of SteepleChase. Japanese pressing released in 1982 as part of Teichiku’s SteepleChase Masterpiece Series, with obi and insert.

A2: Mating of Urgency
B5: Gesture Without Plot
