Originally released on ESP-Disk’ in 1965, this album is by Paul Bley, one of Canada’s foremost jazz pianists. Active since the 1950s, Bley performed with the Ornette Coleman Quartet and the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, while also leaving behind numerous masterpieces with his own groups. Bley leads a quintet featuring Dewey Johnson on trumpet, Marshall Allen on alto saxophone, Eddie Gomez on bass, and Milford Graves on percussion. All of the compositions were written by Carla Bley. Throughout the album, brief themes immediately give way to thrilling exchanges of free improvisation, vividly capturing the energy and excitement of New York’s emerging free-jazz scene. The influence of Ornette Coleman can also be strongly felt.
Italian pressing of unknown release date, believed to be from the 1980s.
