An album released in 1972 by Paul Bley, one of Canada’s leading jazz pianists, active since the 1950s and renowned for his work with the Ornette Coleman Quartet, the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, as well as for numerous landmark recordings with his own groups. Following the previous album The Paul Bley Synthesizer Show, which made extensive use of the ARP synthesizer, this record again features performances on ARP synth alongside RMI and Fender Rhodes electric piano. However, rather than placing the synthesizer front and center as before, the focus here shifts toward a groovier, session-oriented approach, driven by the superb interplay with David Holland and Barry Altschul, resulting in a compelling electric jazz statement. That said, Bley sounds extraordinary no matter what he touches—and Holland is equally impressive, even unleashing the bold move of running fuzz through his bass.
