An album released in 1984 by one of Canada's leading jazz pianists, Paul Bley, who has left behind numerous masterpieces both as a solo artist and with his own groups, as well as through his participation in ensembles like the Ornette Coleman Quartet and the Jazz Composer's Orchestra. In this album, notably, Bley performs original scores solely by himself on piano solo, departing from the usual practice of interpreting scores by Carla Bley or Annette Peacock. It's a self-portrait-like piece where Bley's distinctive deep shadows and spaces between notes are still present. Rather than being breath-taking, what makes his music truly remarkable is the lingering resonance and sense of floating between phrases. Every track on this album is exceptionally good. Highly, highly recommended.
