A key figure on the New York loft-jazz scene and one of Canada’s most iconic jazz pianists, Paul Bley had already been active since the 1950s, contributing to outfits like the Ornette Coleman Quartet and the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra while crafting a trail of remarkable recordings under his own name. This album, issued in 1966 on the American avant-jazz stronghold ESP-Disk’, captures Bley in a stripped-down trio setting with Steve Swallow on bass and Barry Altschul on percussion. Side A is devoted entirely to compositions by Carla Bley, while Side B features pieces penned by Annette Peacock — offering a chance to hear several of the timeless works that would remain central to Paul Bley’s repertoire throughout his life. This copy is an original domestic pressing from the late 1960s.
