A 1974 double album by American flautist Paul Horn, known for his many meditative solo works that make use of the natural reverberation of various historic architectural spaces. Recorded live in Vancouver, Canada, this album features a quintet with Lynn Blessing on vibraphone, Art Johnson on guitar, Dave Parlato on bass, and Bart Hall on drums and percussion. The set opens with A1, which develops from an echoing, meditative flute solo into uplifting jazz, and also includes Eddie Harris’s classic “Freedom Jazz Dance,” the George and Ira Gershwin standard “Summertime,” and a medley of Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions. Particularly rewarding are C1, an extended session of over 18 minutes with deeply swaying electric piano textures reminiscent of early-1970s Paul Bley; D1, which carries that same groove into even deeper territory; and D2, whose ethnic sensibility also brings Don Cherry to mind.
