A truly powerful record has just arrived. This is the first and finest album by Perception, a trio consisting of Jeff “Yochk’O” Seffer—renowned saxophonist known for his work with Zao, collaborations with François Cahen, and participation in Magma—pianist Siegfried Kessler, who also performed with Archie Shepp and Barre Phillips, and drummer Didier Levallet. Released in 1971, the album stands as a masterpiece of deep avant-garde jazz, evoking a sense of connection to Mal Waldron’s legendary The Call (released the same year as the first title on Japo Records, featuring Jimmy Jackson and Eberhard Weber). From the stunning A1, which immediately recalls that dark, spiritual energy, to the rest of the record, the trio unleashes a sound that races and floats through a black, mysterious space with incredible depth and intensity. An essential original French pressing—highly recommended.
