Peter Warren
Bass Is
Enja Records (Germany) 1983
enja 2018 (LP)
sleeve : EX-(light wear on corner, slightly color-faded.)
media : EX/EX(some slightly noise.)
American bassist/cellist Peter Warren, who has deep ties with Japanese jazz musicians through works such as the trio album Trinity with Mitsuhiko Sato and Pierre Favre, and the quartet album Vibrations with Terumasa Hino, released this album in 1972. Side A, as its title suggests, centers on the “bass,” unfolding a frenzied world of low frequencies through freely improvised deep sessions with three bassists: Dave Holland, Jaime Faunt, and Glen Moore. Side B features Chick Corea (piano), Barry Altschul (tabla, drums), Steve Hauss (drums), and Stu Martin (drums), engaging in a surging exchange of interplay. Among the highlights, A3 is especially recommended, where the four bassists each deliver solos that intertwine with Altschul’s tabla performance.
